Tournament Poker Professional Player Profile - Phil IveyPhil Ivey was born in New Jersey in 1976 and first played casino poker at the age of 16 in Atlantic City using faked Id. Turning professional at the age of 21 Phil Ivey’s results have been nothing short of phenomenal. He has received accolades from the some of the biggest names in poker including being called ‘The best tournament player in the world’ by none other than Barry Greenstein. His lifetime tournament winnings of almost $8 Million would appear to back this claim. His nickname ‘The Tiger Woods Of Poker’ is unsurprising in the context of his many achievements to date. However Ivey is uncomfortable with the tag – claiming that Wood’s is at the top of his game while Ivey himself is not there yet. In addition to his long list of poker tournament wins and final tables, Ivey is a strong cash game player. He can be often found in the highest stakes games, not only Holdem but pot limit Omaha and 7-card stud too. Phil Ivey has an excellent record at the World Series of Poker dating back to his first win in the year 2000. The first of 5 bracelets was won in the $2.5k Pot-Limit Omaha event. He has also won bracelets in the Stud Hi-Lo event (2002), ‘S.H.O.E’ event (2002), $1.5k 7-Card Stud (2002) and the $5k Pot-Limit Omaha (2005). Ivey also reached the final table of the $10k No-Limit Holdem main event in 2003 – beaten by an unlucky river card by eventual winner Chris Moneymaker. Ivey has reached the last 25 in the main event no less than 3 times. In addition to his impressive WSOP record Ivey has reached many final tables at World Poker Tour (WPT) events. These include cashes adding up to over $1.3 million. Ivey has been eliminated from WPT final tables on several occasions while holding the same hand – Ace-Queen! Phil Ivey’s biggest single tournament win came in the 2005 Monte Carlo Millions – 1st place paying a cool $1 Million. The very next day Ivey took 1st place in the Full Tilt Poker invitational tournament at the same venue – adding a further $600,000 to his bankroll. Ivey is famously difficult to read at the table. His impassive face giving away little information about his hand. Combined with his aggressive playing style, a relentless series of small bets and raises – Ivey is a formidable opponent. Online Phil Ivey is a member of ‘team Full Tilt’ and can often be found playing at this poker site on the high stakes fixed-limit and no-limit Holdem tables as well as pot-limit Omaha. In addition to poker he is a keen golf fan and keen fan of basketball – supporting sporting teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers and the Houston Rockets.
