When to Slow Play a Poker Hand

Playing very slowly as well as checking and raising has probably won you a great deal of loot at some point or another. Many times when you play in this fashion, you milk the other players out of a great deal of their money. Although this can be profitable poker strategy, there are also certain times that you should play this way and certain times that you should speed it up.

Slow playing without betting the hand can cause you a serious loss and you will be kicking yourself in the butt all night long. There are a few good pointers that will help you determine when to slow down your game and when to speed it up.

Obviously, when you are holding the nuts, or when you have an unbeatable hand, you can slow down and lie back a bit. This is important because the other players can easily be led into a trap, giving you more and more of their money until the pot is overflowing. For instance, if you're one hundred percent sure that you cannot be beaten, you're at no risk at all when you check and raise.

When you're playing with a semi-good hand but you know that you have a chance of being beaten, you should speed up your game rather than slowing it down. When you're ready to raise after checking, you are sending a signal to the opponents that you're strong and that they had better watch out. This is a great way to have the other players fold on you, so with a great hand, be careful.

Check raise at the river after having allowed your opponent to fill the jackpot with his or her money. Also, he or she will most likely want to place a whopper bet at the end before the call. When they do, this is where you can nail them because you can raise. This is great because your opponent will call nine times out of ten and you have led them along on a string until you finally take all of their money.

Learning when to slow down your game and when to speed it up is an important poker strategy and knowing the ins and outs of this method will help you win more than you will lose. Pay attention to the game play and the way things are going. Reading your opponents and knowing if they are aggressive or tight will also help in this area.
