When to Re-Raise in Poker

There are often times when you will be in a poker game and a situation comes up forcing you to make a decision as to whether you should re-raise or call. This is a large decision and can end up either making you a lot of money or losing you a lot of money.

The key is to know which move to make in order to win the hand and rake in as much money as you possibly can. Of course, there is no step-by-step answer that should be followed every time in this situation because each game is different. Each opponent is different as well so your move will be based on many different things.

Should you have a hand that cannot be beat or that you feel will certainly beat your opponent, what other choice do you have besides re-raising ? If you don't, you can lose money. Of course, if you're one of those players who like to be aggressive and make your opponents nervous and second guess themselves, chances are you're going to re-raise.

However, tight poker players will almost always only re-raise when they know their hand is awesome or cannot be beaten. Of course, if you're always playing rough and aggressive poker, you will have more chances to win. You will keep more pots because players are folding and when you do have a great hand, they will not notice a difference in your betting so they won't be scared off by your sudden eagerness to bet. Also, it makes them doubt and second guess themselves as to whether they think they can beat your or will they end up losing their money.

Many people believe in doing this all the time, because your opponent never knows what to expect. Of course, at times it will backfire on you but you will most likely win more than you will ever lose. A tight player is a great thing to be when there is already a lot of action on the board, especially when you know you're going to win regardless. The tight players aren't expected to bet high very often so it really depends upon your personal preferences and desires.

Look at the game, understand who you're playing with, who is winning and what's going on in the game at the particular moment you are forced to make a decision like that. Try to determine the players that you are up against and see what kind of move you should make based on that.
